With J.J. Abrams busy making Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the director's chair for Star Trek 3 was wide open. Roberto Orci, one of the screenwriters behind Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), was planning to make his directorial debut with the sequel, but those plans have now changed, as Orci will no longer calling the shots on the film.
Deadline got the exclusive scooping, noting Paramount and Skydance are now looking for a new director, while Orci stays on the project as a producer. Among the filmmakers being sought to replace Orci includes Edgar Wright, according to the report.
Star Trek 3 was set to be Orci's first major project after parting ways with his creative partner Alex Kurtzman, who he wrote the Star Trek movies with, as well as the first two Transformers movies and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. No word on why Orci is no longer directing the movie, but the fact that he's still on a producer likely indicates it was his own decision and wasn't fired. Having wrote the running script with Patrick McKay and John D. Payne, Orci will also have a writing credit on the sequel.
While the film was eying to start production early next year with a 2016 release to capitalize on the franchise's 50th anniversary, this may delay the film's release planning. Who will replace Orci will be determined fairly soon, one would have to believe.
There were rumors earlier this year star Zachary Quinto would take over directing duties, following suit with how Leonard Nimoy directed Star Trek 3: The Search of Spock, but denied them at the time. However, maybe things will change now with the departure of Orci.
