Sean Penn has been around for a long time, but the two-time Oscar winner has never made an action movie, until now. After seeing Liam Neeson reinvent himself, Penn is the latest seasoned actor to turn to actioners.
Penn stars in The Gunman, which was directed by Pierre Morel, who also directed Neeson in Taken. The trailer, posted on Yahoo Movies, makes it look like Penn has made action movies before, but he’s better known for tackling dramas.
Last year, when Penn was shooting the globe-trotting movie in Europe, he spoke with USA Today about preparing for it, although he didn’t say much. He did train at an Arizona special military training camp.
“I find anatomical discussions much more interesting when centered on the female form,” Penn said. “So I’ll leave it at that.”
Penn said that it was really important to get in the right mindset for the part.
“If a character makes leather wallets, it's great to spend some time actually making leather wallets," he told USA Today. "It gives actors a confidence of their character's history."
The Gunman co-stars Javier Bardem, Jasmine Trinca, Idris Elba, Ray Winstone and Mark Rylance. Open Road Films will release the movie in the U.S. on March 20.
Last year, Penn was seen in Gangster Squad and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
