'Terminator: Genisys' trailer highlights the scope of the Future War, gives you deja vu (Video)

The trouble with the Terminator franchise is that each film has boiled down to the same story - stop a future Terminator from killing members of the Connor family. Any hope that Terminator: Genisys might be different were dashed by today’s trailer.

The trailer reveals what James Cameron’s 1985 classic would have been like if it were made today, showing off the Future War and a strong John Connor (Jason Clarke) rallying his troops. Just like in the original film, he sends Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back in time to save his mother, Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) from being killed.

But the twist here is that Kyle is beat to the past by an older Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger). The three team up to stop a T-1000 (yes, the same exact liquid metal model they faced in T2: Judgement Day) from trying to kill Sarah. So, essentially, while there’s a twist, it all comes back to the same plot.

Oddly, former Doctor Who Matt Smith is not seen in the trailer, so his role is still unknown.

Genisys is the first part of a planned trilogy. It is scheduled for July 1, 2015.
