'The Interview' seen by China, South Korea through illegal downloads, to mixed reviews

After all the craziness Sony and Seth Rogen's The Interview faced throughout these past two weeks, the movie finally hit select theaters yesterday and YouTube/Google Play/Xbox Video as of Christmas Eve. It also wormed its way onto computer screens of hundreds of thousands of people in both China and South Korea via illegal downloads.

So what did they think? Well, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the response wasn't as enthusiastic as some may have thought, even though South Korea is technically at war with its North counterpart and China isn't on good terms with Kim Jong-Un either, despite being an ally to the country overall. At the moment, with no release date set for either location, this may be the only way they can see the film.

As one viewer wrote on Naver, an online portal, via Reuters, "A lot of it is unrealistic and the people who play North Koreans are so bad at speaking Korean. In the scene where Kim Jong Un gets mad...I couldn't quite understand what he was saying." Another viewer on the site also said, "There is no drama and not much fun. It's all about forced comedy that turns you off. Couldn't they have done a better job making this movie?"

But not all the reviews were negative, of course. In fact, one online comment called the Rogen/James Franco-starring comedy "Perfect, the greatest film in history, all hail Sony. Their ability to amuse is out of this galaxy." Plus the movie has a 8.0 rating on Douban, which is essentially the Chinese version of IMDb.

Though it seems users on the site are rating the movie high on the site regardless if they have seen it or not, as basically one giant middle-finger to North Korea. This isn't too different than what IMDb users did when The Interview originally had its release cancelled, with the movie rocking a perfect 10 score for at least a couple days as Gizmodo reported at the time. Rogen's comedy currently holds an 8.5 rating, based on 69,593 voters.
