Since its first publication in 1943, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's The Little Prince has become one of the most acclaimed and beloved children's books of all time. Translated into over 250 languages and voted the best book of the 20th century in France, it's a wonder the book hasn't found a comfortable home on the big screen. Though, it seems that will soon change.
For an animated film adaptation of The Little Prince will come flying into theaters next year, and audiences can get a first look at it from this first trailer, thanks to Vulture. Animated in beautiful CG and stop-motion animation, it's a brief trailer, but looks as though the filmmakers have packed the book's wonder and beauty onto the big screen.
Keep in mind: this trailer is in French. Vulture has the English subtitles, but it's not hard to follow what's going on here. This international trailer follows a lonely young girl who befriends a cooky old man, who tells the story of another lonely child: the Little Prince. While they are not heard in this trailer, the film will feature the voice talents of Mackenzie Foy, Rachel McAdams, Jeff Bridges, Marion Cotillard, Benicio Del Toro, Paul Giamatti, Ricky Gervais and Albert Brooks, just to name a few.
According to The Atlantic, this is not the first time The Little Prince has found himself on the silver screen, as there was also a 1974 live-action adaptation of the book featuring the likes of Gene Wilder and Bob Fosse.
No word yet on when The Little Prince is coming to the stateside, but expect an English-language trailer soon likely telling us when to buy our tickets. As for French audiences, they can see Saint-Exupéry's word and drawings come to life on screen October 7, 2015.
