If you were watching The Walking Dead Midseason Finale titled “Coda” Sunday night as I was you are aware of how emotional it was. Of course as a TWD enthusiast I knew someone major had to die. But who would've thought it would have been our innocent Beth. Here are the Top Ten Moments of the Midseason Finale:
1. “Bob Making a Run for It”
Now this new police officer conveniently named Bob obviously didn't desire to live very long. He clearly didn't know who he was dealing with either. If Rick tells you to stop running your best bet is to stop for goodness sakes. Bob apparently thought he had a real chance of getting away. He kept running even with Rick in pursuit in a car. We've seen how Rick has evolved into someone who is not set on giving multiple chances anymore. And Bob felt that evolution with a car that hit him and catapulted him a couple of feet forward. Now realizing his spine is broken and he can't run he begs to be taken back which informs him is to late. However in what I consider a sign of sympathy Rick shoots him instead of leaving him for the walkers. Good job.
2. “Gabriel Just Had to See It”
Okay so I understand Gabriel has been locked up in a church for a very long time but he’s definitely taking extreme measures in order to see what the world has come too. “I had to see. I had to know.” Didn't we already tell you and show you! Gabriel went from breaking a hole in the ground to throwing Bob’s severed foot in despair, to then leading a pack of walkers back to the church which caused Carl, Michonne, Judith, and Gabriel to be pushed outside. This Man obviously does not think and doesn't know how to survive. One can only hope he gets the memo now and learns to defend himself before he puts our people in danger again.
3. “The Return of Abraham and the Gang”
When we left Abraham he was still recovering from the deceit of Eugene’s “Save the World” trek to Washington. We were left with not really knowing what the group was going to do afterwards. Im sure we all hoped they would go back to Rick and everybody else. Their timing couldn't have been more perfect. After Gabriel set a unintentional death trap for Himself and his fellow comrades at the church there was no telling what they were going to be able to do once those Walkers broke out of the church. Then BOOM! Abraham destroyed the steps and blocked the door with the fire engine truck. Perfect timing! He saved Carl, Michonne, Judith, and Gabriel’s life. What a great entry and reunion for our group.
4. “Dawn’s Fight with a Fellow Officer”
This was an interesting scene. Humanizing someone we obviously hate is already conflicting to see. We are shown over and over how people have changed for the better or the worse in response to this zombie apocalypse. Dawn admitting to killing the previous leader when earlier she beat around the bush when talking to Beth was an eye opening moment. Maybe Dawn wasn't exactly proud of it. Apparently she was the only one with the guts to do it. It is obvious that Dawn has formed some type of bond with Beth that caused it to appear that she was protecting her. But at the same time causing Beth to make the final killing push down the elevator shaft. I will admit the fight was pretty awesome though. She definitely kicked some butt. However this lady’s intentions are all over the place. I couldn't wait for her to be gone, no pun intended.
6. Dawn and Beth’s Conversation in Carol’s Hospital Room
The scene was very interesting to watch. To see the strength that was rising in Beth during this conversation was amazing. She figured out dawn’s real intentions and shoved them in her face. She pointed out how different officers were killed that apparently were problems for Dawn but weren't anymore since someone else took care of it, i.e. killed them. Thats why she covered for Beth. Beth did her a favor. At the same time Dawn figures out that the doctor set Beth up the same way when giving that patient drugs. “Everyone uses people to get what they want.” Beth states to Dawn just before she makes a declaration that she's going to get out of that hospital. Dawn refutes this statement by explaining that they always come back some way or another. What makes Dawn think that Beth would ever come back? Delusional. Then Dawn drops the bomb, she knows that Beth knows Carol, who is “unconscious” in the hospital bed. She goes on the tell Beth that they both can be a part of this ‘world’ she's building in that hospital. Dawn seems to be opening up the Beth just as Beth is closing herself off from her. Dawn tells her she didn't use her and that she will remember what she did. Just as the conversation ends Carol wakes up. I wonder if Carol heard anything significant.
5. Tyreese’s Confession to His Sister
Tyreese’s dilemma with killing people the first half of this season has been completely ridiculous. I know Im not alone when I say his attachment to his humanity was a little annoying (if i can say that). He seems to be holding onto who he use to be which isn't really bad but definitely not helpful when being threatened by i don't know... Cannibals. Sasha is beating herself up because the new Bob was able to knock her out and almost escape. He knows she is beating herself up so When he admits his fault in not killing Martin. He knows he could've but he didn't so he thinks about it all the time. Sasha almost looks like she can't believe what he's saying. She thinks her actions with the new Bob were stupid. Tyreese goes on to say that when they were kids she would follow him around and do everything he did. Suggesting that maybe they're the same even now. Sasha then informs her brother that he is the same and thats good but she isn't and could never go back. Im glad she said that to him. It shows her strength. If only he could join the club.
7. The Deal
I have to say Rick is beyond bold. Presenting the deal to two armed “officers” all the while putting his weapon down showed some serious courage. His confidence is even more increased since he knows Darryl and Sasha have the vantage point as well as his back. These two officers obviously have no idea who they're dealing with. Rick informs them that he has tow of their people and that he wants a exchange for Beth and Carol. After receiving the proposal and presenting it to Dawn the deal is on. So far it appears that Tyreese’s rebuttal to going in the hospital guns blazing was good. These people appear to be reasonable and ready for an easy exchange. Right?
8. 2 For 3?
After the deal seems to be completed Dawn decides she wants to have Noah back. Im not sure if she really wanted him back as a ward or just to show some power. Even with her fellow officers interrupting her trying to get her to let it go she can not let Noah leave. In the least she doesn't even know who she's dealing with. Of course Rick does not agree to this. Noah just wants to go home or at least stay with Rick and his group at this point. After realizing there will not be a peaceful resolution to such a request Noah decides that he's going to go back with Dawn. With our people still protesting he states in a very mature way “I got to do it.” I don't know if other watchers have but I haven't developed a real connection with Noah yet so he could've went back to Dawn for all I cared and I would've been fine. If only things could've been that simple.
9. Beth’s Last Stand and Death
So this scene would have been very emotional for so many TWD watchers. Im not sure if Beth decided she was going to attempt to kill Dawn when she placed the scissors in her cask or after Dawn said to Noah “ I knew you would be back.” Whenever that decision was made Beth sealed her fate. Maybe her attempt would have been more successful if she had chosen a different place to stab Dawn or maybe not. Dawn’s reaction to being stab was a point blank shot into Beth’s head. Though Dawn apparently did not mean to shoot Beth in the head, as we can see from her face afterwards, she also sealed her fate. With emotions running high Darryl took it upon himself to kill Dawn before anyone else could respond. What a shocking moment of this episode. I was in total shock and a tab bit confused. Beth’s last words were “I get it now.” but what exactly did she get? what was the goal in stabbing Dawn? Was it to protect Noah or to give Dawn what Beth thought she deserves? Either way it was extremely emotional. I know I wasn't the only one crying. Especially seeing Darryl carry Beth out crying and Maggie fall into pieces. Definitely one of the most emotional kills on the show thus far.
10. Morgan’s Return
Now all season we have been teased with little glimpses of Morgan. He seems to be traveling to no particular place. After following the signs on the trees left by the cannibals he arrives at the church. We have obviously killed every walker inside and left. Morgan goes in and sets a couple things at the alter He proceeds to pray but couldn't help but laugh a little bit at his surroundings. He then gets up to leave and sees the map Abraham left for Rick so they could follow them to Washington. At the end of the note left on the map “Rick Grimes” appears clear as day. Morgan sees this and seems surprised. Hopefully this will be the start of their reunion. It gives us something to look forward to after experiencing such a great loss.
How will our group move on? How will the Morgan and rick reunion be? What’s next for our survivors? Im sure we’ll find a way to move on with all our scars just as we have in the past. Only time will tell. The Walking Dead Season 5 returns February 2015! I’ll be watching!
