Yankees sign relief pitcher Andrew Miller to four-year, $36 million deal

Well, we all knew that nothing would move the New York Yankees quite like a Boston Red Sox spending spree, and now our thoughts are playing out the way we imagined. On the same day the Yankees announced the acquisition of their new short-stop, Didi Gregorius, they also announce the signing of relief pitcher Andrew Miller.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports has confirmed the deal, four-years and $36 million.

Miller has had an up and down MLB career up until this point. In 2006 he was considered one of the best young starting pitching prospects in the game with the Detroit Tigers organization. After being shipped to the then Florida Marlins in 2008, he struggled mightily as a starter, posting a plus-five ERA in his first two seasons, notes Baseball Reference.

Going to Boston in 2011 is what saved his career. The starter transitioned into a relief role and thrived beginning in 2012. Last season he pitched for Boston and Baltimore after a trade deadline deal sent him the Orioles way. He finished 2014 with a 2.02 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 62.1 innings.

Miller was the bonafide number-one bullpen free-agent coming into this offseason and will now join Dellin Bettances in a very formidable bullpen. It is still up in the air whether Yankees closer David Robertson will return. One thing's for sure though: they've now created a nice safety-net should they lose Robertson.
