‘Reign’ Opinion Recap: A Marked Man

We all know that The CW loves their weird sibling love triangles: Damon/Elena/Stephen; Klaus/Catherine/Elijah; Lucas Scott/Peyton/Nathan and on Reign, Bash/Queen Mary/Francis. I’m not saying we don’t love it, but laid out like this, it’s a little creepy.

Anyways, when Reign returned from its season 2 mid-season break it stuck to tradition with strange sibling incest. We found out in the beginning of this season that Bash and his (half) sister Claude had had, ahem, sexual relations. But, guess who didn’t know…Kenna. Guess who finds out this episode…Kenna. You can imagine her delight.

Meanwhile, Mary is still set on living a ‘separate life’ from Francis. We still can’t understand her logic here. I mean, look at the man! While she sits by her elegant window in her elegant pajamas, he’s bringing her firewood and food and whatever else he can think of to somehow be around her. Any logical woman would see a King doing this for her and think to herself, “Jackpot!” But, not Mary. Maybe that’s why we’re not queen? Can’t be sure.

Her annoyance with his efforts has forced her to decide to move to their country chateau. It would all seem very, “Woe is me,” however, remember what happened to Mary when the Protestant rebels invaded the castle? She killed the men who took advantage of her, but she still can’t move past it.

Mary’s timing in deciding to leave is impeccable and she is simultaneously able to save Conde from being discovered as having the Dark Mark. They flee to the King of Navarre's vacation home. (Remember the King of Navarre is Conde’s brother Antoine.)

As Conde warns Mary when they entire his brother's home, Antoine’s parties involve a sort of extremely sexually charged version of spin the bottle, only there’s no bottle and there’s no closet to hide in while you make out. Naturally, Mary retreats to her room and Conde gets laid by some other woman who unknowingly pretends to be Mary. If the show has taught us anything, its that royals were pretty kinky back in the day.

So, here’s how it ends. Mary realizes while talking to Greer that she’s not the only one suffering because of what happened to her. So, there may be hope for Francis and Mary yet. Which is good, because we miss when they were all lovey-dovey and adorable.

With some help from Kenna, Claude realizes that her mother has been poising her. Although, we’re not sure we can really blame Catherine because she’s currently having sex with her dead husband and seeing the ghosts of her two dead daughters?

Conde and Mary sort of talk about how he’s in love with her. But then he has to burn his flesh to hide the Dark Mark, so that sort of ruins the moment.

Mary returns back to France excited to see Francis and hopefully rekindle their epic love. But, instead, walks in on him and Lola asleep in the same bed. With their baby, of course! It’s more innocent than it sounds.

However, according to next week’s trailer, Francis thinks Mary has some things to fess up to!

Tune into Reign on The CW at 9 p.m. on Thursdays.
