‘Sleepy Hollow’ Recap: “Pittura Infamante”

We see an art restorer working on a painting when it appears that blood begins pouring out of the painting. It appears to be his imagination as he looks very confused.

Abbie and Ichabod are discussing how Ichabod and Katrina are going to try and enjoy a night out without any apocalyptic issues. They attend a function at The Historical Society where they see the Colby painting in which was in the house of John Adams. This was the painting that was being worked on by the art restorer Mr. Hollister. He questions Ichabod on his beliefs of evil spirits in Sleepy Hollow. He feels a dark presence…Katrina feels the same evil presence and Ichabod says they should be careful.

Abbie is reading through her mother’s old journal when an officer draws a gun on someone in the hallway. She rushes out and sees a confused looking Captain Irving. Abbie looks shocked that he is alive.

Katrina is having flashbacks of her friendship with Abigail Adams. She feels that she left her time too soon and didn't get to say good-bye to anyone. Ichabod says they must adjust and try to make their way in present day. We see Hollister studying the paintings when something lunges at him. A maid screams and they rush into the next room to find Hollister dead, hanging upside down.

Abbie calls Ichabod and tells him Irving is alive. Ichabod reminds her that Henry claimed his soul before he died so this could mean that Henry is still alive. It seems like there is a strange coincidence between the evil presence being felt and the arrival of Irving. Ichabod feels that the murder of Hollister isn't just a random killing, but it was the same style of murder committed in 1781 which was meant to invoke ‘The Hanged Man.’ Katrina recalls conversations between her and Abigail Adams about the murders.

Abbie talks with Irving in the interrogating room. Irving remembers nothing after the battle and Abbie tells him that he died. She tells him that The Horseman of War owns his soul and she doesn’t want him to betray them. Irving seems very distraught and confused.

Ichabod and Katrina notice the fresh blood on the Colby painting. The assassin is closer than they think. They notice that the painting looks at them. Katrina suggests that the painting could be a doorway…much like Moloch used mirrors. The artist of the Colby painting is named James. They discovered that he disappeared a year after the murders of 1781. In his painting he is trying to complete the inverted cross to summon ‘The Hanged Man.’ They realize he is targeting another victim.

Abbie tells Jenny that Irving is still alive. Jenny does her best to defend Irving but Abbie says that he died and they need to get a weapon from Nick in order to put Irving back in his grave. Abbie also talks with Irving’s wife and tells her they need to find out if Irving is dangerous or not.

Ichabod finds out the evil presence of the Colby painting is growing. He goes to warn Miller, a member of The Historical Society while Katrina continues to have flashbacks of Abigail Adams. Katrina catches a glimpse of a bloody Colby outside of the painting.

Jenny goes to retrieve the bullets from a dead demon in case they need to put down Irving. Ichabod tries convincing Miller that he is in danger. Ichabod sees him being sucked into the Colby painting. Katrina learns that Abigail Adams learned of Colby’s intentions and was the one who trapped him in the painting.

They take the Colby painting to where Hollister was restoring it earlier. Katrina begins an enchantment that allows them to enter the painting and Ichabod says…”I’ve entered the mind of a murderer.”

Jenny wants Abbie to promise that the bullets are going to be a “last resort” to use on Irving. Jenny suggests that maybe Katrina could help save Irving. She is very uneasy that Ichabod is not answering his phone.

Ichabod and Katrina search for Colby before he carries out his work. They find Miller bleeding out and know that Colby is very close to being able to escape. They see Colby rise from a puddle of blood. Katrina tries another spell that saves them and returns them from the painting. They must destroy the painting.

Colby grabs Ichabod then comes through the painting. He lunges at Ichabod but Abbie shoots him with an enchanted bullet. Abbie then shoots the painting causing Colby to fall down dead. Sheriff Reyes is very upset that Abbie talked to Irving. Ichabod is very appreciative that Abbie arrived when she did. Ichabod promises Katrina that they will find a new state of being…together.

Abbie tries to apologize to Sheriff Reyes when Reyes tells Abbie that the DEA might have found evidence that could vindicate Irving…allowing him to go free.
