Steve Kroft, a journalist on CBS’ long-running newsmagazine 60 Minutes, has been forced to publicly apologize after the National Enquirer published a story about his steamy extramarital affair.
Earlier today, The Enquirer posted a preview of a full investigation that appears in this week’s issue. The tabloid identified a woman Kroft was seen with on Dec. 17 as Lisan Goines at the Essex House in Manhattan, just a few blocks from the home he shares with his wife.
According to the New York Post’s Page Six, the tabloid obtained explicit texts Goines, 41, and Kroft, 69, traded over a period of three years.
In one alleged exchange between the two, Kroft wrote to Goines, “Working late. Just ordered out. Would rather be eating your pudding.” She then reportedly replied, “Don’t work too hard this week bc I wanna wear you out afterward.”
Kroft later sent a statement to the Post, apologizing for the affair.
“I had an extramarital affair that was a serious lapse of personal judgment and extremely hurtful to my wife and family, and for that I have nothing but regret,” Kroft said. “My wife and I are committed to each other and are working hard to get past this, and consider it a private matter.”
According to the Enquirer, Kroft met Goines, a lawyer, in 2011 and told her that he was in a sexless marriage. They met in both New York and in Washington, DC.
Kroft has been married to author Jennet Conant since 1991 and the two share a son. He has been with 60 Minutes for 26 years and has won five Peabody Awards.
