Jim Harbaugh leaving for the University of Michigan created one gigantic hole at the head coaching position for the San Francisco 49ers. Today that hole has been filled from within.
According to ESPN, defensive-line coach Jim Tomsula has been named the next head coach of the 49ers organization. He is a name that wasn't talked about frequently heading into the offseason as a candidate.
The 49ers went through eight total interviews, including a second one with one of the men. Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase and New England Patriots offensive guru Josh McDaniels seemed to be the highest on the list.
Everybody around the league though CEO Jed York wanted to go offense with their next coach. Everybody turned out to be wrong.
Another shocking element here is that Tomsula seemed to leapfrog his own boss from this past season, Vic Fangio, who was the defensive coordinator who also interviewed for the job on December 30th. Very rarely will you see a team promote within and not have it be either coordinators who get the job.
Other candidates who interviewed were Seattle Seahawks DC Dan Quinn, former NFL head coach Mike Shanahan, Detroit Lions DC Teryl Austin, and now each head coaches of the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets respectively, Rex Ryan and Todd Bowles, notes CBS Sports.
