Up and coming pop sensation, Kat McDowell has released Rise Above. McDowell might not be well known currently in the United States pop scene but this album is a strong introduction from her to a wide listening audience.
McDowell was born in Tokyo and raised in New Zealand, much like her unique background growing up, it is clear that McDowell embraced a variety of influences to create this album. After she graduated from college, McDowell returned to Japan to start her music career. It wasn’t until she took matters into her own hands and created her own musical label that her music and creative vision were fully recognized.
Rise Above is the third full length album from McDowell and she has really crafted her fun, light, yet sincere pop sound. McDowell creates melodies that compliment her lyrics and help to frame an entire musical picture. The album opens with the track "Hopeful" which showcases her love of playing the guitar along with her incredible ability as a singer-songwriter.
Even though McDowell wasn't raised in the United States, a few musical influences like that of Jason Mraz or even the Foo Fighters can be felt. McDowell has a similar love of stringing together unique word combinations to create fun lyrics, just like that of Mraz. Even though her album has a strong pop feel to it, at times it has strong hints of rock 'n' roll.
Listening to her previous albums, Hope in You and You and Me, it is clear that McDowell took the time to work on her craft and really develop a strong pop sound on this album that feels modern and unique. Rise Above isn't like everything that is currently on pop radio, her ability to be a strong songwriter and creative instrumentally makes her stand out.
Stand out tracks on the album include, "Still Learning How To Start," "Goodbye" and "Final Win."
