Mom starring Anna Faris and Allison Janney centers on Christy played by Faris, a newly sober single mom who tries to put her life back together in Napa Valley with the help of her mom Bonnie played by Janney showing us how a dysfunctional family functions.
Here is what you missed on this weeks Mom.
Bonnie hears Christy crying from her bed. She tries to cover her head with a pillow to drown out the crying, but she can still hear her or does Bonnie actually care? Well, she claims she has to pee anyway. She walks in on Christy who is sitting on the bathroom floor crying because she hates the fact that she is still a waitress. She wanted so much more for her life. As Bonnie sits on the floor beside her she begins offering solutions. Christy yells at her, “Mom, can you stop trying to solve things and just listen to my feelings for a change?” Bonnie scoots next to Christy sitting against the tub and says, “No wonder why men get annoyed with us!” Then she proceeds to hug Christy and asks, “Are we almost done here? I have to pee.”
Alvin, Christy’s dad and Bonnie are trying to rekindle their relationship from years ago before they fell apart while Christy was young. They are out on a date at a nice restaraunt. They begin discussing going to a late movie and ice cream one night. Alvin thinks she’s crazy because they are not young like that anymore. She promises him sex if he goes along with the plan. He then jokingly says, “So you want to stay up late for a movie, eat ice cream and have sex? Do you think I am Superman?” She puts her head down. He then tells her they can go for ice cream after, but he will have to stop at Rite-Aid for something to help process the dairy. Bonnie says, “Pick me up a couple of D batteries and a copy of Mens Fitness magazine?”
Christy is at her AA meeting when this new member named Steve shares with the group. He tells the group how long he is sober and that he is a lawyer. When he sits down Christy introduces herself and asks him questions about his profession. She is curious about what it takes to become a lawyer so she invites him for a cup of coffee to find out more. She tells him that its her treat yet he insists its on him as he is stealing the donations from the donation plate being handed around the room.
Their lunch date is in the local diner. They discuss her worries and concerns about her future. He tells her that it can take a decade to become a lawyer which bums her out because she wanted something to happen faster for her. He offers her to do some hands-on training a few days a week at his practice. She becomes hopeful and offers to buy lunch. He again says no. He proceeds to put a used band-aid from his finger into his coffee cup. He tells Christy its on the house and quickly waves his hand to the waiter. He tells the waiter that they have a problem while motioning to his coffee cup.
Alvin offers to take Bonnie to a rock concert to see Aerosmith. She tells him that it has been forever since she has been to a concert sober.
Christy is now in the kitchen surrounded by Violet washing dishes and Roscoe at the table. She’s on her laptop trying to apply for the GED test. She gets scared thinking about what pushing this button means for her. Christy states out loud while reading the application, “Click this button and you will be on your way to your GED, being a lawyer and getting a better future.” Her daughter Violet turns to her to ask what she’s waiting for. Christy tells her that she’s scared. Violet offers to push the button. Christy is telling her no because she feels it’s her choice, her future and “her button” to push. In the middle of her speech her son Roscoe pushes the button. He appologizes telling them he wants to play his computer game.
Christy goes to the law office to learn lawyer stuff from Steve. While shes there, he cleans out five empty liquor bottles being he decided to become sober. She starts going through boxes for him to sort through documents. She asks him about a certain case marked, “Roxy vs Nudes, Nudes, Nudes.” He explains to her that the client whose real name isn’t Roxy, wants to sue her employer. Christy asks him many questions and he becomes impressed. He tells her how smart she is. As she is thanking him by telling him that this is what she needs. She needs someone complimenting her and making her feel confident. He tries to kiss her. She stops him, calls him a jerk and storms out.
Christy arrives home to Violet sitting on the couch. She tells her daughter that she doesn’t have to watch Roscoe on the days she was going to the law office because she won’t be doing it. Violet happily tells her that she bet her grandmother that Christy would give up and now Violet is winning the bet. Christy was insulted, but still doesn’t want to work with Steve now. Violet calls her a chicken. Christy assures Violet that Steve is a jerk and this is why she is quitting. Christy agrees with her daughter that in fact she may be a quitter because she’s feeling down. Violet feels bad and tells her that she is sorry. She tells her that she isn’t a quitter. She reminds her that she stayed sober. Christy begins to feel all warm inside and goes to give Violet a hug. Violet leaves the room avoiding the hug because she doesn’t want to be mushy.
Alvin and Bonnie are in a silent ride home from the concert. He thinks that shes upset about getting old. Bonnie tells him that she is not just upset because they’re getting old, but because they wasted many years and didn’t grow old together. He pulls the car over to tell her that he loves her and he wants to spend his life with her. He feels they shouldn’t think about the past, but focus on the future. Then he asks her to go in the backseat with him. He says, “in order to feel young, you gotta act young.” While in the back seat being intimate, a cop knocks on the back door passenger window asking them what they are doing. Alvin tells the officer that they just got back from a concert and they were feeling romantic. The officer states, “Aren’t you a bit old for this?” Bonnie yells to the officer, “Who are you calling old?” The officer hears her call him a douche then he tells her one more word and the cuffs would come out. As he is walking away, Bonnie yells out the window, “Word!”
Christy starts banging on the law office/apartment door where Steve is sleeping. Steve lets her in. She tells him that she wants to still work with him. She tells him she doesn’t need him to believe in her. She only needs to believe in herself. He says that he is sorry and tells her that he called the client Roxy about the case. He talked to the employer bringing up points that Christy told him and got a settlement for twelve grand for the client. He tells her that they won the case together. She is so happy that they won their first case. Then her cell phone rings with her mom on the other end. Bonnie is telling her what happened and that she is in jail. Christy hangs up the phone and tells Steve that they have their second case. She tells him she will save him time by telling him that the client is definitely guilty.
Christy is driving home from jail with her parents in the back seat. She’s giving them the third degree. She tells them she is disappointed. She sounds exactly like a parent yelling at their child. It made her parents feel young. They started to make out in the back seat and they tuned her out. Chisty is yelling,” Stop it guys. Don’t make me pull this car over!”
