'Mom' Recap: Three smiles and an unpainted ceiling

The Plunkett household is rocked by an unexpected death on Mom starring Anna Faris and Allison Janney.

During the opening scene, Bonnie and Alvin wake up in bed. They talk about sleep overs and waking up in one anthers arms. Bonnie tells him that there is a vacant apartment near her. Alvin jokes about the notion of moving into that apartment to be closer to her. Bonnie loves the idea. She tells him that she has to run it by Christy.

Bonnie goes home. Bonnie sees that Christy is awake so she sits on the bed. Bonnie tells her the idea. Christy is all for it. Christy tells Bonnie that she can spend more time with her dad now.

Alvin moves in. They go over to Bonnie and Christy’s apartment to tell the kids. Alvin offers to take out the family. Violet declines. Christy tells her that she should be with them. Violet says, “Mom, he’s moving across the courtyard. I can go for pizza with him anytime.” She leaves the room. Christy apologizes to her dad for Violets behavior.

Alvin and Bonnie go back to Bonnie’s room after pizza out. They start making out and during foreplay, Alvin silences and doesn't move. Bonnie screams. Christy runs into the bedroom to find Bonnie panicking with Alvin's body in the bed. Bonnie believes that Alvin died. Christy calls 911. She tells the operator that her dad had a heart attack.

Christy calls Roscoe’s school to tell them his grandfather died and he won't be in school for a few days. She walks passed Violet’s room and Violet calls her mom over. Violet says that she feels guilty and she apologizes to Christy for blowing her grandfather off.

Bonnie searches for black clothes and fails. Christy tells her mom that she spoke with Alvins ex-wife and his ex-wife isn’t happy with them. His ex-wife told Christy that The Plunketts aren't welcome at his services. Bonnie tries to leave the house to go see the ex-wife. Their friend Marjorie stops Bonnie at the door. Bonnie doesn’t want to listen so she tries again to get through Marjorie so Marjorie slaps her in the face. Bonnie is taken aback. She is shocked that Marjorie smacked her. Marjorie reminds Bonnie she has them. Marjorie recommends they hit a meeting.

At the AA meeting, Bonnie shares. She tells the funeral attendees that when she was with him in the past she couldn’t stand him and wanted him to die. Then a year ago, Alvin came back into their lives and she still wanted him to die. Within time, they fell in love again. Then he dies. She was so emotional that she ran out of the meeting.

Christy find Bonnie at a bar nearby with a full drink. Christy makes her stop. Bonnie admits she is afraid to be alone again. Christy says, “You got me.” Bonnie says, “Meh”. They both giggle. Christy tells her they should crash the funeral. They find Bonnie black clothing.

Christy and Bonnie sit in on the services. His ex speaks about Alvin and she talks about how he made two mistakes and two are here today. Bonnie gets in front of everyone to explain about her relationship with Alvin. They grab a painting of Alvin and she tells her to start the car and they both run.

Bonnie walks in on Christy crying. She didn’t really get time with her father. Bonnie is holding her daughter crying when the episode ends.
