There's a new Bourne coming, with Matt Damon returning to the titular character and Paul Greengrass to the director's chair, but the release will be a week later than originally expected. Additionally, word has now come out that Damon is lending his Academy Award-winning writing skills to the picture, alongside Greengrass and Christopher Rouse.
Variety got word of the new release, now slated for theaters on July 29 instead of July 15. This new release pits the movie against the comedy Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates and set its one week before the new DC adaptation Suicide Squad. Bourne was originally going to square off against Ice Age 5 and the second weekend of Star Trek 3.
Additionally, Collider reported on the screenwriting development. Damon, while earning his one-and-only Oscar for co-writing Good Will Hunting with Ben Affleck, has kept a fairly low-key writing career, save for penning Gerry with Casey Affleck and Gus Van Sant and 2012's Promised Land with John Krasinski. This will also be the first writing credit for Rouse, who previously served as the editor of The Bourne Ultimatum and all Greengrass' films since.
In an interesting note, this will also be the first Bourne movie in the series without Tony Gilroy, who co-wrote the first three movies and wrote and directed the last one, The Bourne Legacy starring Jeremy Renner. Though considering Damon previously slammed Gilroy's work on The Bourne Ultimatum, it is perhaps not too surprising he wasn't welcomed back.
There's still no word on the plot of this new Bourne movie, and remembering how well the last Damon-starring action sequel tied up the character's journey, it's hard to imagine what they could still tell. Though considering they got them both back, there must be a story they got that's worth their time and effort.
Damon, most recently passing his starring role in Manchester-By-The-Sea over to to Casey Affleck, is currently filming the lead part in Ridley Scott's The Martian. He is also set to star in Alexander Payne's newest film Downsizing.
