Sun Gods to Gamma Rays - 'A Ghost To Find' album review

When Sun Gods to Gamma Rays formed back in 2013, the group started working right away on their first EP. The process of their musical creation came out of many practice sessions. Their sound started to develop organically and became as unique as their band name. Since that first EP, The Water, The Wave, the band has not only advanced their musical sound but also added a level of professionalism to their work with their latest album, A Ghost To Find.

Sun Gods to Gamma Rays is made up of Mitch Miller on drums, Brian Gollnick on bass, Paul Flynn on guitar, Peter Bregman on rhodes and Brianna Kocka on vocals.

A Ghost To Find was created in seven months with help from famous producer Joe Mabbott. Mabbott has worked with artists ranging from Snoop Dogg to The Cloak Ox. From the groups first EP to this album, the influence of Mabbott can be felt in the musical arrangement and overall structure of the album. It took Mabbott's hand to really slim down portions of the bands sound and amplify what makes them so special, which is their ability to highlight the beautiful vocal range of Kocka through complex layers of instrumentals that form memorable melodies.

The album opens with "Prism Light" which starts the album off on the right note. Kocka's vocal range and ability to deliver the lyrics in such a powerful yet smooth way, is captivating. Sun Gods to Gamma Rays has a way of making their instrumentals, which compliment Kocka's vocal range, feel like they have come out of the current EDM landscape but that they still retain a variety of unique elements. The sound is light yet haunting and feels modern yet has a hint of indie rock mixed it.

The band has an ability to bring together many different musicals influences to help make this album feel new and interesting. The songs flow into one another and it is clear that the band has come a long way since they formed back in 2013.

Even though this band is a young and still growing musically, this album is a strong showing and provides a road map to how the band will move forward. If they keep building and working on craft their unique sound, which at times is hard hitting but can go back to airy and light, they will be a group to watch.

Stand out tracks on the album include, "Prism Light," "Funeral Drum" and "Bloom."
