Will Smith-starring football movie 'Concussion' opens on Christmas

Will Smith may no longer be the king of the fourth of July, but it looks as though the Fresh Prince has taken his sights to another holiday. Smith's latest film, the football drama Concussion, is coming to theaters on Christmas Day.

ComingSoon.net reports the new movie is replacing Mission: Impossible 5, which vacated its Christmas release to come out on July 31. Concussion will now be in contention with Monster Trucks, David O. Russell's Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence, and Alvin and the Chipmunks 4.

Considering the time location, and also the fact that a movie is actually pushing its release date towards Christmas instead of away from it thanks to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this should hopefully be a sign of confidence from Sony. It's possible the studio is hoping the new drama serves as a heavy Oscar contender for next year's race.

In addition to Smith, Concussion also stars Alec Baldwin, Luke Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Beyond the Lights), Arliss Howard, Paul Reiser, David Morse and Albert Brooks. It focuses on the doctor who discovered the traumatic head injuries a life playing professional football causes. Smith's character would then go on to make the world aware of his operations. Written and directed Peter Landesman (Parkland), Concussion is based on the GQ article "Game Brain and produced by Ridley Scott. The film was previously titled Game Brain.

Smith next will be seen in Focus, co-starring Margot Robbie, which hits theaters on February 27. For the actor's next role, he'll fill the shoes of Deadshot in the DC-adaptation Suicide Squad.
