Health officials in North Carolina have said that two people who have contracted an antibiotic-resistant superbug have died and the number of those infected may be increasing.
The Associated Press noted that the two deaths were patients who lived in the Charlotte area and about 15 other people were treated in Carolinas HealthCare hospitals for carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae or CRE.
This is thought to be the same superbug that contributed to two deaths in California recently.
As previously reported, those patients were said to be infected sometime between October and January after undergoing routine endoscopic procedures at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
Additionally, the Los Angeles medical center contacted nearly 180 patients who could have also been exposed to the superbug and are offering home-test kits.
The CRE bacteria can resist most antibiotics. It typically affects patients in long-term care facilities and those who use ventilators or catheters for extended periods of time.
Other CRE outbreaks have occurred in the past in both Illinois and Washington State.
