At least 20 people on board a Carnival float in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, were killed when they were electrocuted by a high-voltage power line.
The Associated Press noted that the freak accident happened when someone aboard the float attempted to move a power line out of the way in order for the float to pass underneath.
When spectators saw the flash, people began to scream and a chaotic scene followed. Reuters reported that seven people actually died atop the float and the others were killed in the panic that ensued.
"I saw the wire falling and sparks and I started running for my life," said Natacha Saint Fleur, a 22-year-old who was near the float at the time of the accident.
In addition to the deceased, at least 46 others were injured, officials said. They are being treated at a local hospital.
Thousands gather in the streets annually to see the parade for the Carnival celebrations in which different bands perform and compete while passing through on the floats. The particular float where the accident occurred was sponsored by a Haitian rap group called Barikad Crew.
