Alejandro G. Inarritu says he has 'brutal friendship' with Sean Penn after Oscars joke

Sometimes inside jokes should be kept “inside,” but Sean Penn never got that memo. So, when he jokingly asked “Who gave this son of a bitch a green card?” before announcing the Best Picture winner last night, the audience at home was stunned. Alejandro G. Inarritu, of course, was not.

After the ceremony, the Birdman director spoke with the press and said he found Penn’s joke “hilarious.” He added, “Sean and I have that kind of brutal (relationship) where only true friendship can survive.”

Inarritu said that he’s told Penn similar jokes himself. “I make on him a lot of very tough jokes that I will not tell you,” he joked, notes The Associated Press.

Inarritu directed Penn in 2003’s 21 Grams, which was Inarritu’s first film in English. Although Penn hasn’t appeared in any of Inarritu’s subsequent films, they have clearly remained friends.

In total, Inarritu won three Oscars for Birdman - Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture as a producer. He’s the second consecutive Mexican director to win Best Director, following Gravity’s Alfonso Cuaron last year.

Birdman also won Best Cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki’s work. The film was edited together to look like it was filmed in one continuous take.
