Alejandro G. Inarritu’s Birdman continued its sweep of major guild awards this weekend, taking home wins from the Cinema Audio Society and the American Society of Cinematographers.
The film’s sound team won the CAS’ top award on Sunday. The team includes production mixer Thomas Varga; re-recording mixers John Taylor and Frank A. Montano; scoring mixer Gustavo Borner; ADR Mixer Jason Oliver and foley mixer John Sanacore.
Also on Sunday, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki won the ASC’s feature award.
Birdman is up for both Sound Editing and Sound Mixing at the Oscars. Lubezki was also nominated for Best Cinematography. If Lubezki ends up winning, it will be his second in a row, since he won last year for Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity.
While Birdman did well on Sunday, it was not a player at Saturday's Writer’s Guild Awards. There, The Imitation Game took home Best Adapted Screenplay, while The Grand Budapest Hotel won Best Original Screenplay. At the Oscars, Birdman is competing for Best Original Screenplay.
Birdman appears to be in great shape heading into Sunday’s Oscars, but it has one blemish. While it did well at the guild awards it was eligible for, the film didn’t win the top prize at the BAFTAs on Feb. 8. Instead, the award went to Boyhood. The last time the BAFTA Best Film winner didn’t win the Best Picture Oscar was in 2008.
The Oscars are on Sunday and air live on ABC from Los Angeles. Here’s the full list of nominees.
