After hearing about it for literally decades, and even with a reboot coming out, it seems we will never escape rumors about Ghostbusters 3.
Dan Aykroyd recently sat down with Ron Bennington on his Sirius XM show Unmasked and talked about the future of Ghostbusters. As we've previously reported, Paul Feig is currently working on an all-female reboot starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, but that might not necessarily mean we'll never see the original crew again.
Aykroyd said that they have a bunch of drafts of the old concepts for a true Ghostbusters 3 with the original cast, and that "we're going to be able to use it some day," according to Slashfilm. Aykroyd said he hoped they could revive the franchise with this reboot and then go on to do a more conventional sequel later on.
What are the chances of this actually happening? Probably not very good. Aykroyd has been talking about Ghostbusters 3 for years in just about every interview he's ever done, but he and Ernie Hudson seem to be the only cast members who are actually into the idea. Bill Murray has repeatedly passed on any future involvement with Ghostbusters, Rick Moranis has been retired since 2006, and Harold Ramis (Egon) sadly passed away last year.
Aykroyd will likely continue to champion the idea of a true sequel, but it seems pretty unlikely that we'll ever see one. Until then, we'll have to accept this Paul Feig reboot as the future of the franchise. So will it be any good?
Later in the interview, Aykroyd said that he's happy with what Feig has done, calling it very tasteful. He said that the franchise needed a reworking and a new engine, and that's what this reboot has done. The actor also praised the movie for its female empowerment with its tremendous cast of funny women in the lead roles.
If you were hoping to see any of the original cast in the new movie, that probably won't be happening either. The new film won't be the old Ghostbusters passing the torch to the new ones; it's a total reboot, ignoring the previous movies and starting from scratch, according to Screen Rant. Feig said the movie will be an origin story and that it will be "really scary."
