Danish police arrest two men accused of aiding Copenhagen suspected gunman

Police in Denmark have arrested and charged two men for hiding the suspected gunman in Saturday’s attack during a free-speech forum in Copenhagen.

CNN reported that Michael Eriksen, the attorney for the men arrested, said his clients were charged with two counts of accessory to murder and five counts of accessory to attempted murder. So far, neither man has been charged under the country’s anti-terrorism laws.

As Reuters noted, the attack occurred when a 22-year-old gunman opened fire at the Krudttønden cultural center during a public seminar titled Art, Blasphemy and Freedom of Expression. In addition to the shooting at the café, where one person was killed, the suspect is also thought to be responsible for fatally shooting a guard at a synagogue.

"The two men are suspected of helping the perpetrator by giving him advice and assistance in connection with the shootings at Krudttøndenre and Krystalgade," police said in a statement on Monday.

The gunman, who Danish police have identified as Omar Abdel Hamid El-Hussein, was later shot and killed by authorities.

The attacks have officials drawing comparisons and pointing to similarities between this attack and the Charlie Hebdo attacks that occurred in Paris last month. Swedish artist Lars Vilks was in attendance at the Copenhagen event. Vilks has received several threats on his life for pictures he drew of the Prophet Mohammad. The Hebdo offices were also believed to have been targeted because of cartoon images of Mohammad.
