DC Pierson likely is best known, if at all, as one-third of the YouTube group Derrick Comedy, alongside Donald Glover and Dominic Dierkes, and occasionally popping up in random commercials and in the background of Community. But he's also an author, and if this proof-of-concept short film works, his first novel The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep and Never Had To could soon come to a screen near you.
The self-produced short film comes from director Dan Eckman's Vimeo account. Eckman, who directed Pierson in Derrick Comedy's feature film Mystery Team and also helmed several episodes of Community, has tried to make this movie a reality for years. This video, which he adapted alongside Pierson and producer Meggie McFadden, is their latest effort to get the feature film made.
Starring Jack Quaid (The Hunger Games) and Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel), The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep and Never Had To centers on two high-schoolers who find solitude in their self-made comic-book. When characters and objects from their creations come to life, however, they find themselves on an adventure beyond even their wildest imagination. It clearly has influences in Back to the Future, Gremlins and other '80s properties laced through its veins.
While a tad too self-aware and a little all-over-the-place tonally, there's certainly potential, creativity and good-humor found in this mini-adaptation, and one would imagine the feature film would hold way more creativity. Plus, it proves Revolori, who also appears the Sundance's hit Dope is a star in the making.
In addition to this novel, Pierson also wrote another novel Crap Kingdom last year.
