Eddie Murphy finally made his return to Studio 8H after a 30-year absence, but his appearance at the Saturday Night Live 40th anniversary special left much to be desired. Even the crew seemed caught off guard by how short it was.
Late last month, Murphy sounded excited to return to the stage for the first time since he hosted the show in 1984. He was a cast member during the early 1980s, starring in countless now-famous sketches and essentially keeping the show alive. With that in mind, his return was a huge deal.
It was so big that Chris Rock did a five-minute introduction just for Murphy. Rock went on about how there can never be a “next Eddie Murphy” because there is only one. But then Murphy came on stage and it was ... anticlimactic.
Murphy essentially came on to say “hello” to the audience and thank SNL for launching his career. But that was it. Even Chevy Chase’s short bit after the Weekend Update was at least funny. But Murphy didn’t even make a joke.
It looked like the show’s crew was even surprised by how short Murphy’s speech was. After he finished, the show didn’t go to commercial, so Murphy repeated his last line again before they finally went to an ad.
Maybe by the time SNL celebrates its 80th anniversary, Murphy will be ready to tell a joke again in Rockefeller Center.
