'Everything is Awesome' insanity at the Academy Awards

If top-notch actor and actress nominees at the Oscars weren’t enough to hold the viewer's attention, then the performance by rock duo Tegan and Sara and musical comedy group, The Lonely Island, sure did the trick. Their performance of “Everything is Awesome” from The Lego Movie, nominated for Best Original Song, loosened up the audience with it’s insanity and child-like ambiance.

“Glory” by John Legend from the film “Selma” may have won the Oscar, but “Everything is Awesome” won at life. The unforgettable Oscar moment began with an animation of a LEGO choir singing, which quickly faded away as sisters Tegan and Sara emerged on a platform surrounded by child-like drawings of Oscar trophies. The platform was then spun around by dancers dressed as construction workers to reveal the Lonely Island trio of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone decked out in baby blue tuxes with capes. As Andy Samberg sang “Feeling more awesome than an awesome possum,” a giant dancing possum simultaneously appeared, which was the icing on the cake to all of absurdities occurring on the award stage. Dancers fit to look like cowboys and astronauts presented Oscar awards, made out of LEGOs, of course, to several celebrities in the crowd, such as Oprah, Steve Carell and Channing Tatum.

With all of this going on in the background, Will Arnett also made an appearance as Batman playing electric guitar, as several others “played” LEGO-built instruments.
The epic confetti explosion marked the end of the ensemble as all the dancers and performers made their final poses, which filled the entire award stage.

Shawn Patterson, the writer of the song, was inspired by his divorce with his wife when he wrote the sarcastic theme. He said, “I think all of us in life have moments [where] you go, ‘Well, is everything awesome right now?’ You know, your house is on fire and you’re standing on your lawn looking at your house and you go, ‘Man everything is awesome,’” according to New York Post.

Patterson’s thought process may hold true for many of the Oscar nominees. No, maybe they didn’t win, but hey at least that performance was awesome.
