'Fifty Shades of Grey' dominates international box office, makes over $239 million

Fifty Shades of Grey completely took the world by storm this weekend, scoring the biggest Valentine’s Day debut ever. Universal’s film adaptation of E.L. James’ erotic novel took full advantage of the widest release for an R-rated movie ever.

Sam Taylor-Johnson’s film got off to a hot start, making $8.5 million on Thursday and then $26 million on Friday. According to Rentrak estimates, the film finished the three-day weekend with $81.7 million.

Universal also gave the film a wide international release, so it made a whopping $158 million in foreign markets. In total, the film’s worldwide gross is at $239.7 million.

Fox’s Kingsman: The Secret Service came in a distant second, but that’s not going to worry the studio. The R-rated film made $35.6 million, which is stunning for a movie based on a graphic novel that’s not about Marvel or DC characters. Colin Firth and Samuel L. Jackson are members of the supporting cast, but the film’s star is unknown Taron Egerton.

The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water added $30.5 million, bringing its total to $93.7 million. Considering it is the first Spongebob movie in over a decade, that shows how successful Nickelodeon has been in keeping the character popular. It’s probably going to reach $100 million by the end of this week.

Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper continues to plug along, adding $16.4 million. It is already the highest-grossing war movie ever made and is now up to $304.1 million in North America alone.

Coming in at No. 5 is Jupiter Ascending with $9.4 million. It is now up to $13.4 million. The international box office hasn’t come in to save it just yet, as it has only made $58.9 million in total from foreign markets.
