'Fifty Shades of Grey' plummets at box office, 'Hot Tub Time Machine 2' sinks

Everyone who wanted to see Fifty Shades of Grey already has, at least based on how poorly the film did in its second weekend at the box office. The film plummeted by over 70 percent from its record-breaking Valentine’s Day weekend debut.

The Universal film, starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, grossed just $23.2 million in its second weekend, according to Rentrak data. That’s a huge drop from the previous weekend, when it made $93 million over Valentine’s Day and Presidents Day weekend.

Still, the film did it’s job. It is already up to $130.2 million domestically and has made a whopping $2580.5 million overseas. There’s no reason why Universal shouldn’t go ahead and turn E.L. James’ second and third novels into movies.

The rest of the Top 3 remained unchanged. Kingsman: The Secret Service added $17.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $67.1 million. The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water is now up to $125.2 million domestically, thanks to another $15.5 million this weekend.

Surprisingly, the best new release of the weekend was Disney’s McFarland, USA with Kevin Costner. The film debuted to $11.3 million.

The DUFF, released by Lionsgate, made $11 million in its first weekend.

The last new movie of the weekend was Hot Tub Time Machine 2, which was a complete flop. It debuted with just $5.8 million. Considering the poor reviews and the fact that the original came out in 2010, that’s not too surprising.
