Former Miss Turkey could go to jail for posting satirical poem about President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Former Miss Turkey, Merve Buyuksarac, might have to pay the consequences for insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on social media. She reportedly faces jail time for comments that are considered offensive.

Buyuksarac’s lawyer, Emre Telci, said on Wednesday his client faces a maximum of two years behind bars for it.

Fox News reports the model and beauty queen, 26, denies posting a satirical poem was insulting to the president but a prosecutor in Istanbul is demanding that she get prosecuted. It’s ultimately up to a judge if proceedings will begin.

She was detained last month for the crime of insulting a public official.

The Telegraph reports she posted a quote to her Instagram page from The Master's Poem, from the Turkish satirical magazine Uykusuz, which uses lines from the Turkish national anthem to condemn Erdogan.

She reportedly told a prosecutor while in a Çağlayan court, "I did not personally adapt the poem titled 'The Poem of the Chief'. I shared it because it was funny to me. I did not intend to insult Recep Tayyip Erdoğan."
