Filmmaker Joseph Kahn decided to make his own, incredibly elaborate Power Rangers fan fiction. Considering he’s directed music videos and two feature films, it’s a surprising venture. Even more surprising is who stars in it.
Power/Rangers is a 14-minute film from the director, who helmed Torque with Ice Cube and Detention with Josh Hutcherson. Kahn posted it on Vimeo for free and told fans not to sent him money for it, even though it doesn’t look like it was cheaply made. In addition, he got James Van Der Beek and Katee Sackhoff to star in the film.
From the opening moments, it’s clear that Kahn did not make this film for young fans of the franchise. There’s plenty of curses and other elements that would get this an R-rating.
The timing is interesting, since Lionsgate and Saban Entertainment are currently developing a Power Rangers movie. Kahn isn’t working on that and he told HitFix that he would have turned it down if he was asked.
"The irony here is that I wouldn't even want to make Power Rangers: The Movie for real,” Kahn explained. “Like if I had to make a Power Rangers movie, this is it. It's 14 minutes long and it's violent and this is what I have in me. If they offered me the 200 million [dollar] version, the PG-13 version, I literally wouldn't do it. It's just not interesting to me.”
Another bit of irony is that Kahn isn’t a big fan of Power Rangers. He even needed help from Dutch Southern to write the script. Van Der Beek also got credit for co-writing the screenplay. He also had help from producer Adi Shankar (The Grey, Lone Survivor).
“The first person I thought of to play the main role was Katee Sackhoff, and she signed onboard because Adi happened to know her,” Kahn explained. “Then when I was looking for her nemesis, it was Adi who pitched James [Van Der Beek] and I think they're friends or something.”
Here’s the full film, which is NSFW and features strong language.
