Jane the Virgin’ Recap: Chapter 13, Jane learns a lesson in letting go

Let’s rehash everything that’s been going on in Jane’s very complicated life. Her famous-telenovela-star-father has recently shown up in her and her mother’s life. Xo and Rogelio are in like (they haven’t said the L word yet), but they’re abstaining from sex because of Xo’s promise to God to keep her legs closed. It’s a struggle, especially since Rogelio is around more now that he got fired from his own show. Milos, Petra’s psycho ex, showed up and revealed that her mother has been lying and isn’t actually paralyzed (she did, however, get acid thrown on her face, so…pick your battles). Sin Rostro was revealed and is actually Rose, not Rafael’s father like Michael thought. Actually, Rose killed Emilio so he can’t really be a suspect anymore (#thatawkwardmomentwhen you release a ton of cement on your husband, eternally entombing him). Oh, and Michael still loves Jane. That’s everything!

This week, a young Jane learns a lesson in letting go that involves releasing an extremely tight grip on an unsuspecting nurse to receive an unpleasant shot. Cut to about 10 years later when a 20-weeks-pregnant Jane begs her mother to let go of her so her abuela can properly hem her graduation dress. Is anyone else obsessed with how the writers of the show always tie in the lesson learned at the beginning of the episode to everything else that occurs? It’s genius. And, we can all learn a little from young Jane’s life experiences.

Michael and his partner confront Rose and Rafael about Emilio potentially being Sin Rostro. The tension between Rafael and Michael is palpable, probably because Michael’s bright blue eyes would literally pierce through Rafael’s skull if that were physically possible. I can’t help but wonder who I would choose if I had a millionaire hotel owner and an ambitious detective vying for my affections. (Is anyone else dying to live out their Suit Life of Zack and Cody fantasies? Pent house trumps police car any day.)

Unfortunately, Jane’s 20-week check-up doesn’t go very well. The doctor finds an eco on the baby’s heart and in its bowel, which could be a chromosomal issue or nothing at all. The only way to tell is a procedure that’s only side effect is a potential miscarriage (which would be terrible in general, but would be even more terrible because Rafael doesn’t have any more sperm…cancer survivor, remember?) Every time they showed the little gleaming light in the baby’s heart, I died a little on the inside. Gina Rodriguez really knows how to make a girl cry. (Is it embarrassing that I was fighting back tears?)

To Rafael’s very apparent dismay, Lachlan is the first person he runs into after his terrible doctors appointment with Jane. The hotel is in trouble. Shockingly enough two murders and an ongoing investigation have caused a lull in hotel bookings. Who knew? Side note: every time Lachlan comes onscreen I have flashbacks of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Costas sweeping Lena off her Greek feet. I can’t help it.

Jane decides with her mother and abuela not to do the test, because regardless of the results, she wouldn’t have an abortion. She just has to let go. It’s a recurring theme, people. But like any expecting mother, she can’t just forget the fact that her unborn child may have some sort of birth defect. So, she does the unthinkable…she Googles it. Big mistake.

You can guess what she wants to do now.

Upon discovering that Emilio had a mistress, Michael calls said mistress in for questioning. She reveals that Rose has told a few lies throughout the investigation. And then it happens- a literal light bulb goes on above Michael’s head (his partner accidentally hit the switch). But he’s too late. Rose is gone and her room is empty.

Rafael organizes an entire graduation ceremony for Jane since she’s on bed rest from the test and is missing her actual ceremony. Rogelio designates himself as the keynote speaker, of course. “It is an honor and a privilege for me to be here today. It’s a moment that I’ve waited for for the two and a half months I’ve known you.” I literally laughed out loud. He means well, he really does.

Petra has yet again made a terrible choice in lovers, it seems to be her MO. Lachlan has finally made his move and kicked her out of the hotel. Maybe that’s what you get when you dump a man for his nemesis, marry the nemesis, divorce the nemesis, and then try to get back together with said man. I’m just spit-balling here though…However, her creepy ex just so happens to have bought her 33% of Rafael’s hotel, so we think she’ll survive. I’m sure Rafael and Jane will be thrilled!

The most shocking part of the whole episode, though: the ending. Prepare yourselves, because I actually gasped- as in, I was completely shocked and suffered from extreme loss of air.

Michael and his partner are watching footage from the night Roman Zazo (Rafael’s college roommate who had an affair with Petra) was impaled on an ice block. To their surprise, Emilio, Rose, and Tom (the dead bell boy), are all accounted for just seconds before Roman died. So then, who killed Roman?

Spoiler alert: Roman. Is. Alive.
Second spoiler alert: Rafael knows and has been lying this whole time!

Say it with me now…WT*?!

Next week’s episode looks absolutely insane! I can’t wait to see what happens:
