While the Saturday Night Live 40th anniversary special itself went off without any problems, there was at least one awkward moment caught on camera before the show. Jim Carrey just had to ask Matt Lauer about Brian Williams.
During the red carpet pre-show, Carrey, who provided the current SNL season with one of its most memorable moments by impersonating Matthew McConaughey, wondered out loud where the disgraced NBC Nightly News anchor was. After all, had Williams not been suspended six months without pay by NBC News, he probably would have been there.
“Can I ask you a question, you guys?” Carrey said, notes Deadline. “Where are you hiding Brian Williams? Where is he?”
Lauer and Savannah Guthrie both looked surprised, as did Tina Fey, who was standing with them. Lauer tried to get Carrey to move on by looking at his watch and saying, “Oh, look at the time.”
“I just want to say something in his defense: If the helicopter in front of me gets hit, I’m taking the story,” Carrey said, finishing his joke.
“Thank you, Jim,” Lauer said. “Appreciate it.”
After his 2003 Iraq War story was called into question, NBC News suspended Williams for six months without pay last week. Since then, other stories Williams has told over the years have been called out by the media.
As for Carrey, he appeared on the SNL special in the Celebrity Jeopardy sketch, where he reprised his McConaughey impression.
