Joan Rivers, Elaine Stritch snubbed from Oscars 'in memoriam' segment

As with every year, there were snubs during the Oscars “in memoriam” segment last night. However, the snub of Joan Rivers left everyone on Twitter stunned.

Rivers, who died in September 2014, only directed one movie and never really had a career on the big screen, but that was no reason to leave her out. The comedian was a mainstay at Oscars ceremonies with her red-carpet coverage. Fashion is such a big part of the show that Rivers shouldn’t have been forgotten like that.

“Joan Rivers is among the many worthy artists and filmmakers we were unfortunately unable to feature in the In Memoriam segment of this year's Oscar show,” an Academy spokesman told The Hollywood Reporter. “She is, however, included in our In Memoriam gallery on Oscar.com.”

Her Twitter fans certainly didn’t forget about her. Fashion Police co-host Kelly Osbourne noticed quickly, tweeting, “Am I missing something or was @Joan_Rivers really left out of the #Oscars memorials?”

Elaine Stritch was also missing. While she is best known for her work on Broadway, the actress also starred in two Woody Allen movies and was featured in the documentary Shoot Me. She died in July 2014.

Other snubs, which THR pointed out, include Saturday Night Live’s Jan Hooks, comedian Taylor Negron and James Bond villain Richard Kiel.

Harold Ramis’ name was briefly trending on Twitter during the Oscars when some were concerned that he was snubbed. However, he was mentioned in last year’s “in memoriam” segment.

The segment was introduced by Meryl Streep and began with Mickey Rooney. Robin Williams, Bob Hoskins, Richard Attenborough, Lauren Bacall and Mike Nichols were also included. Surprisingly, Louis Jourdan died only a week ago, but he was included.
