Laura Benanti joins Melissa Benoist in CBS' 'Supergirl' pilot

Laura Benanti, who is currently on ABC’s Nashville, has been cast as Supergirl’s mother in the upcoming CBS pilot about Superman’s cousin.

Benati is set to play Alura Zor-El, Supergirl’s Kryptonian mother, notes Deadline. It sounds like she will be similar to Jor-El, Superman’s father, who continued to provide words of wisdom to Superman long after Krypton was destroyed.

Like Superman, Kara Zor-El was sent to Earth. At the beginning of the series, she will be 24 and just decides to begin embracing her superpowers to become Supergirl. Melissa Benoist (Glee, Whiplash) was cast as Kara. Mehcad Brooks will play Jimmy Olsen, who is much different from the comic book character.

Supergirl will be produced by Warner Bros. TV and is written by Greg Berlanti (The Flash, Arrow) and Ali Adler.

Benati’s other credits include NBC’s short-lived comedy Go On and stints on Royal Pains and Law & Order: SVU.

In other Supergirl news, some comic book sites have started speculating about the plot of the series. Comic Book.com discovered that actor Jesse Liebman posted his audition tapes on the web and they have since been deleted. He was auditioning for the role of Winslow “Wynn” Schott, who will be a geeky tech whiz who lives next door to Kara.

Based on the script that Liebman read, it looks like Wynn is the one who creates Kara’s costume and also has a crush on her.
