Luke Spehar arrives and impresses with acoustic 'All is Gift'

Luke Spehar is proving that the third time might, in fact, be the charm. All is Gift is Spehar's third major album to be released and this is by far his most impressive and thoughtful musical work. It was clear that Spehar had emerging and captivating talent when he released Be Still in 2010 and No Other Way in 2011 but it wasn't until he opened for Ben Harper on tour and got his production assistance on All is Gift that his talent really started to come into focus.

Spehar grew up in a small town outside of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota. Those subtle Midwest influences can be felt throughout this record and it is a different musical sound. This isn't the type of album that is created in the suburbs of L.A. or New York. This is an album that comes naturally and organically as you grow up and experience new things.

All is Gift opens with "Outpouring," which showcases what makes Spehar special as an artist. He opens with only his acoustic guitar. That instrument fills the room and has such depth. It is simple, yet clearly lays out the direction for this album and captures the magic behind it. As the album transitions into other songs like "Ellisa" and "Away We Go," it is Spehar's vocal range combined with the effortless of the guitar that creates this unique musical endeavor. The simplicity of the acoustic guitar frames what Spehar is saying and singing about. It highlights his lyrics which are thoughtful, creative and inspiring.

Harper was a co-producer on this album and his influence can be felt. The album feels organized and has the right amount of production value. It doesn't feel over produced but it has been crafted in a way that highlights the best of Spehar.

At times Spehar does seem to be inspired by the musical likes of Jack Johnson or John Mayer but he does bring in his own personality and influences, which make this album feel different in a sea of singer-songwriters who play their acoustic guitars. This album feels refreshing and new.
