Netflix picks up reboots of 'Inspector Gadget' and 'Danger Mouse'

Today is a pretty incredible day for animation fans, and we're now hearing about yet another classic animated show which will be returning to TV very soon.

Earlier we reported on a reboot of Ducktales to air on Disney XD in 2017. Now we're also getting word that Netflix will be bringing a reboot of Inspector Gadget to the United States next month.

The updated Inspector Gadget show was produced by DHX Media and actually already aired in Europe, but Netflix will now have the exclusive US rights.

The new show features a completely new look, now being animated with computer generic effects compared to the classic series' hand drawn animation. Erik Barmack, Netflix's vice president of global independent content, said he hopes the show will appeal both to kids and to parents who grew up on the original series.

Inspector Gadget originally aired from 1983 to 1986, though it remained on the air in reruns for years after. It follows the adventures of a cyborg policeman who's constantly screwing things up, but who usually manages to get the job done with the help of his endless amounts of gadgets and his niece Penny. The show was most recently adapted into a live action movie in 1999 starring Matthew Broderick, though that film was relatively poorly received.

According to The Verge, the new series seems to actually be a sequel to the original series rather than just a straight reboot, with the premise being that Gadget decides to come out of retirement when his arch nemesis returns. Penny is also older in this version, so it takes place a decent amount of time after the original series ended.

The new show sounds like it could be pretty fun, but based on that clip above can we talk about what on Earth they did to the theme song? The original Inspector Gadget had one of the most catchy and iconic theme songs of all time, yet the new one just sounds awful. Let's hope that isn't an indication of the quality of the rest of this reboot.

But wait, there's more! Netflix has also ordered a reboot of Danger Mouse. This one will be a Netflix original to air in 2016.

Danger Mouse was a British show which originally aired in the United Kingdom but which was also broadcast on Nickelodeon from 1982 to 1992. The show is also a sort of spy comedy revolving around Danger Mouse, a secret agent mouse.

This isn't the first time Netflix has turned its attention to animation. It was announced last year that they plan to reboot The Magic School Bus to air in 2016. The company has also worked out a deal with Dreamworks for original content based on their characters like Turbo Fast and <>All Hail King Julien.

With Netflix in the game, it's a pretty great time to be a fan of classic animation.
