An Ohio news anchor proved that if you don’t know what a word means, you shouldn’t use it. While trying to compliment Lady Gaga’s Oscars performance, she slipped in the offensive term “jigaboo,” right next to her black co-anchor.
The two were discussing Gaga’s The Sound of Music tribute from last night’s ceremony, which earned wide acclaim as one of the top moments from the show. It proved that Gaga could sing without dancers or production to hide her voice. While trying to make this point, anchor Kristi Capel used the offensive word to describe Gaga’s usual music.
A video of her segment has since gone viral, so Capel is apologizing to Twitter users who complain to her. “I do apologize if I offended you, I didn't know the meaning behind it or that it was even a word. Thank you for watching,” she has written back to them.
Here’s the segment:
@HotpocketJohnny I do apologize if I offended you, I didn't know the meaning behind it or that it was even a word. Thank you for watching.
