Emma Morano might not be a household name, but she is in the record books. At 115 years and three months, she is the oldest person in Europe. How did she hold on to life for so long?
In an interview with the New York Times this week, Morano, who lives in Verbania, Italy, said that she has two secrets to a long life.
First, she has been eating three raw eggs a day since her teens. Her doctor suggested that she start the habit to ward off anemia. If she really has stuck to that plan, it means that she’s eaten over 100,000 eggs in her life.
Next, she says that staying single has helped her. She hasn’t been married since 1938, when an infant son died and the marriage ended. While she had suitors, she never married again. “I didn’t want to be dominated by anyone,” Morano said.
Morano still lives in a tiny apartment by herself.
It’s important to note that Morano’s secrets may not hold the key for everyone. Genealogists note that a long life could also be hereditary. It certainly does run in Morano’s family, since one of her sisters lived until she was 102. Another nearly made it to 100.
Morano was born on Nov. 29, 1899 and is the fifth-oldest person in the world. According to USA Today, there are still six people alive who were born before 1900, including three women living in the U.S.
