Robin Thicke performs piano medley during 'Blurred Lines' trial testimony

Robin Thicke gave a special performance on Wednesday, but it was not taped for any show. Instead, he had to perform a piano medley of songs during his testimony in the copyright trial over his 2013 single “Blurred Lines.”

Thicke is being sued by the family of the late Marvin Gaye, as they allege that “Blurred Lines” was a rip-off of Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up.” The family also sued the song’s publisher, Sony’s EMI April, but they reached a settlement in January 2014.

The legal battle really began in August 2013, when Thicke pre-emptively sued the Gaye family before they could to protect his song. They filed their suit days later. Pharrell Williams and T.I. are also named as plaintiffs in the case, as they collaborated with Thicke on “Blurred Lines.”

On Wednesday, Thicke too the witness stand, with piano in tow. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Thicke performed U2’s “With Or Without You,” “Let It Be” by the Beatles, Alphaville’s “Forever Young” and Bob Marley’s “No Woman No Cry.” He finished off with Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror.” Thicke’s legal team also had him perform sections of “Blurred Lines” and “Got To Give It Up” to prove the differences between the songs.

According to E! News, Thicke also had to confirm statements he made in the infamous deposition that went public. He claimed that in the wake of “Blurred Lines”’ incredible success, he never did an interview while sober. He also wanted to take credit for writing the song, even though it was really penned by Williams.

On Wednesday, Thicke said he "was not present when the song was created” and noted that, by claiming he was, “I was living in revisionist history for my own benefit.”

Thicke insisted that “Blurred Lines” and “Got To Give It Up” “only share one chord.”

The trial will continue through next week. Williams, T.I. and Thicke’s ex-wife, Paula Patton, are also going to take the stand.
