Roman Polanski will attend extradition hearing in Poland

Roman Polanski will be present at an extradition hearing in Poland later this month, the Oscar winner’s lawyer said on Tuesday.

The court in Krakow will consider extradicting Polanski back to the U.S., where he is wanted on a 1977 child sex conviction. According to Reuters, the hearing is scheduled for Feb. 25.

“In line with the declaration that was made before, Mr. Roman Polanski will appear in the court,” attorney Jan Olszewski told Reuters.

Polish law states that even if the court does approve the extradition request, a justice minister will still have to approve it.

Polanski pleaded guilty in 1977 to having sex with a 13-year-old girl. He did sever 42 days in prison after striking a 90-day plea deal. However, he feared that a judge would give him more jail time, so he left the U.S. in 1978.

The issue over his possible extradition had come up in recent months since Polanski is filming a movie about the 19th Century Dreyfus Affair in Poland. He was first questioned by Polish prosecutors in October. In January, prosecutors there officially confirmed that they did receive an extradition request from Los Angeles prosecutors.
