'Sleepy Hollow' Recap: "What Lies Beneath"

We see utility workers walking down the underground tunnels talking about how they will be parking garages in the next year. They walk through a crack in the wall and find what appears to be a sealed tomb. They open the tomb and the workers are dragged down there by a demon.

Ichabod and Abbie are walking in the harbor and Ichabod is talking about still adjusting to the present day. They are walking across battleships and discussing the symbols of combat that are everywhere. Abbie feels like they could be fighting evil without an endgame. She gets a text from Sheriff Reyes about a missing person.

They arrive at the scene and get the report on the three missing utility workers. They decide to search the tunnels but Abbie is confronted by Calvin Riggs, a brother to one of the missing men. Abbie promises they are going to do everything they can to find them. They explore the tunnels and discover the cracked wall and find the sealed tomb and the abandoned equipment. Ichabod sees the radar mapping tool and credits Thomas Jefferson as the only man who could have designed this tomb. They find a cell phone with footage of the demon that took these men.

Irving runs into Jenny at the bar. He asks a favor from Jenny. He asks her if she can recover his personal items from the police station by hacking the evidence room. Jenny agrees to it after the notices a tattoo on his arm.

Ichabod and Abbie are discussing the tomb that Jefferson had built. It is called ‘The Fenestela.’ Ichabod relates it to his time period and how Jefferson used the tomb as a vault for vital secrets. Ichabod recalls his troubled relationship with Jefferson in the past. Ichabod says that one day Jefferson completely wanted nothing to do with him. They are reading a journal that reveals that Jefferson could have been behind the creatures who are protecting the tomb.

They visit the tomb and go down the stairs. Abbie tries to contact the trapped utility workers. They come into contact with dozens of these creatures and as they are escaping Ichabod is being dragged down but Calvin Riggs uses the flash from his camera to scare away the creatures.

Calvin wants an explanation from Ichabod and Abbie. They tell Calvin his brother is alive. They promise him limited access to the investigation. Ichabod is skeptical to do this but ultimately agrees. In The Archives they discover that the creatures were actually called Reavers. They used to be Washington’s men who were ordered to guard The Fenestela. Ichabod speculates that they have been down there for hundreds of years. Ichabod, Abbie and Calvin return to the tunnels.

Jenny and Irving arrive at the police station to hack the evidence room. Jenny keeps watch while Irving searches for his belongings. Jenny pulls a gun on him and tells him she knows he is a member of The Hellfire Club. They were the club responsible for trying to raise Moloch. Irving offers an explanation, but shoves Jenny and escapes from the room.

Ichabod takes Calvin’s camera and adds powder to it to amplify the flash. This allows them to make their way down the stairs. They begin searching for the utility workers and they find the entrance to The Fenestela. They begin fighting off the Reavers and make their way inside. Ichabod is shocked to see Thomas Jefferson standing before him.

Ichabod questions how this is possible and Jefferson reveals that he was using supernatural power to harness energy in a cube which allows them to be seeing him. Jefferson calls himself a “deeply kindred spirit.” Ichabod says they have not come for the information inside The Fenestela, but to recover the workers.

Jenny and Frank continue to fight in the evidence room. Irving tries to explain himself, saying that his soul is tarnished. Irving shows how he passed the test with Katrina…with a temporary salvation which hid the true nature of his curse. Irving reveals that he has been stealing money from The Hellfire Club in order to provide for his family. Irving says soon that the good part of him will be gone forever soon.

Ichabod asks Jefferson for assistance. Jefferson explains that is the purpose of The Fenestela. Abbie goes deeper into the tomb and discovers the remains of what look to be a utility worker. She sees the other two…still alive. Jefferson reveals that he knows Ichabod and Abbie are witnesses. Jefferson says that if they destroy the nest, they will destroy The Fenestela. Jefferson tells them everything himself and Washington learned about the witnesses is inside this chamber.

Jefferson revealed that he couldn’t tell Ichabod anything until the second witness(Abbie) arrived. Everyone that they needed in order to get this far has been lost to them. We see a flashback of Ichabod and Jefferson discussing the Declaration of Independence and we see Jefferson rebuff him. Jefferson reveals he built this entire chamber for them. Ichabod and Abbie reveal that their decision is to recover the workers. They approach the nest and try to rescue the men without waking The Reavers.

The Reavers awake and Ichabod begins taking them down. They make their way to the ladder and are able to escape and Calvin is reunited with his brother. They come to the conclusion that they have to destroy The Fenestela. Abbie takes the workers to get medical attention while Ichabod goes back inside to destroy the chamber.

Ichabod makes his way inside and fights off The Reavers. Jefferson begs Ichabod to reconsider his decision. Ichabod explains why he is making the decision he is and Jefferson tells him that Ichabod was also a founding member of this country and that the country is “in good hands.” Ichabod sets the charges and escapes the tunnels moments before it explodes.

Abbie and Calvin talk and Abbie says now is not the time for people to know the truth. Calvin tells Abbie to check her e-mail. The e-mail tells her to trust him.

We see Katrina sleeping when she sees something through the sunlight. Henry is sitting there watching her. Henry says that he is here because Moloch betrayed him and he killed him for Katrina. Katrina wakes up from this dream she is having. She turns around and sees the rose from her dream sitting on the table…
