Star Wars usually inspires modern technology, not the other way around. But Jony Ive, an Apple designer, may have inspired a new lightsaber that will be seen in The Force Awakens.

In a long profile of Ive, The New Yorker revealed that Ive and The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams were once at a New York dinner party together.
Abrams said that Ive shared “very specific” ideas for new lightsabers that night and some of his ideas will be in the new film. He didn’t give any specifics of course, but we did see a new lightsaber in the teaser trailer.
“It was just a conversation,” Ive told the New Yorker. “I thought it would be interesting if it were less precise, and just a little bit more spitty.”
Ive added that the new version of the lightsaber could be “more analog and more primitive, and I think, in that way, somehow more ominous.”
It’s possible that the new lightsaber could be the three-pronged saber seen during the trailer. The name of the villain was later revealed to by Kylo Ren.
We have to wait until Dec. 18 to see if there are other new lightsabers in the movie that Ive may have inspired.
