Stephen Hawking praises Eddie Redmayne after Best Actor Oscar win for 'Theory of Everything'

The performances by Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones were easily the best parts of The Theory of Everything, so it’s a good thing that at least one of them won at the Oscars last night. Redmayne wore his joy on his face and Stephen Hawking, the man he played in the film, praised his work.

Hawking has been a big supporter of the film, even letting director James Marsh use his real computer voice. So, it’s no surprise that Hawking was quick to congratulate Redmayne.

“Congratulations to Eddie Redmayne for winning an ‪#‎Oscar‬ for playing me in The Theory of Everything Movie,” Hawking wrote on Facebook. “Well done Eddie, I'm very proud of you.”

Redmayne was clearly surprised to win, even though he had won several awards leading up to the ceremony, including a Golden Globe and SAG Award. The 33-year-old dedicated his win to everyone suffering from ALS, the disease that Hawking suffers from. Redmayne had to portray the disease on film, forcing him to act in a wheelchair for the majority of the movie.

The Theory of Everything was nominated for five Oscars, but Redmayne’s Best Actor trophy was its only win.
