Taylor Swift doesn't get swallowed whole in the pop music world with '1989'

Taylor Swift's attempt to leave her country roots behind and enter the realm of pop has been set in motion from her last album Red. With the likes of "I knew you were trouble,” you knew she was headed there. 1989 is her fifth album and this time she wanted to be bolder.

She put herself out there as an artist and tried something new. She made a bold move both musically and with her zip code. She recently transitioned to New York City and bought a place in Tribeca. Swift was born in 1989 hence the album title. The style of this album which shows her pop side more so than other albums also has more of an 80s sound to the beats, the processing of her voice and even lyrically in my opinion.

In her opening song,"Welcome to New York" she is telling us this is a happy transition. She’s mastered Nashville and now she wants a piece of the Big Apple. She sings, “It’s a new soundtrack/I can dance to this beat/Forever more/The lights are bright/But they never blind me.”

On her second single, "Blank Space" she talks about failed relationships and how messy love can be. She makes herself out to be the dating disaster. “I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream” is one of the lyrics in the song that has gone viral. It’s a clever line. The song is a remarkable listen.

"Style", is definitely an ode to the slick back hair on a guy and the classic Marilyn Monroe look or even a glimpse into the 80s with the styles people wore. “You got that James Dean, daydream look in your eye and I got that red lip, classic thing that you like” are some spectacular lyrics of this gem.

"Out of the Woods" sounds like a song that could have appeared on an 80s John Hughes’ brat pack soundtrack.

"All You Had To Do Was Stay", "I Wish You Would", and "Bad Blood" are not favorites, but they are probably those songs that grow on you.

"Wildest Dreams" and "This Love" are those ballads that a Swift fan will love.

"This love" sounds very breathy.

There are traces of Imogene Heap which is masterful on "Clean" If you are a fan of the two, this is a treat.

"I Know Places" is definitely a song that you can picture her being at an open mic night or where they perform words on stage. You can picture her talk-singing to possibly a beat box with the beat sounds.

"How You Get The Girl" is a flawless pop song and ballad combo.

Last, but not least is "Shake It Off" which won Swift a Grammy nomination at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. "Shake It Off" proves a country girl can go mainstream pop and have her followers just fall in place. Even with her showing everyone that she is a fish out of water when it comes to being engulfed in today's circles of pop stars, she proves that her differences and out of place appeal win out.

Swift has definitely grown musically. Her choices are making her a pop culture phenomenon and help show where she is musically today. Every song on 1989 is worth a listen and many are worth putting on repeat.
