Taylor Swift donates $50,000 of 'Welcome To New York' royalties to NYC Public Schools

Taylor Swift is hoping to do her part for New York, agreeing to donate the royalties from her single “Welcome to New York” to New York City Public Schools. Initially, the news stirred some controversy, but her publicist clarified exactly what she plans to do.

News of the donation was first announced by Capital New York, which confirmed with a Department of Education official that Swift donated $50,000 to public schools.

Swift had previously announced plans to make donate “Welcome” royalties to public schools while on The View in October 2014.

While this sounded like a nice gesture, the New York Daily News notes that some on Twitter criticized her donation. After all, the 1989 singer is reportedly worth $64 million, so $50,000 is like a drop in the bucket for her.

However, Swift’s rep assured the New York Times that this wasn’t a one-time donation. Swift will continue donating proceeds from the song to NYC Public schools.

Swift recently moved to New York, where she has a $20 million penthouse apartment in Tribeca. 1989, her first full pop album, has sold four million copies since it was released in October.
