'The Middle's' Charlie McDermott to star in CBS' 'Super Clyde' pilot

Charlie McDermott will star in CBS’ re-tooled Super Clyde pilot. While that’s great news for him, it’s not so great for fans of ABC’s The Middle and the crew behind that show.

Greg Garcia’s Super Clyde was given a second opportunity at life in January, when CBS ordered a new pilot. The network previously ordered the project to pilot in 2013, with Harry Potter’s Rupert Grint as the title character instead. However, the eye network passed on it.

Since Grint isn’t coming back to play the geek-turned-super hero, CBS TV has cast McDermott, Deadline first reported.

McDermott was available because Warner Bros. TV had not started renegotiations with The Middle’s cast for a potential seventh season. None of the show’s stars are signed for another year and it’s not clear if ABC plans on renewing it yet.

With that series in limbo, it’s easy to see why McDermott, 24, would jump at the opportunity to topline his own series. He currently plays Axl Heck on The Middle and the character could easily be re-written as a recurring character, since he is now in college. Of course, they would only have to worry about that if CBS actually does pick up Super Clyde.
