The U.K. branch of Krispy Kreme has been forced to apologize for an ill-conceived promotion called “KKK Wednesday.” While that was supposed to stand for Krispy Kreme Klub, more people were reminded of another KKK.
Krispy Kreme released a calendar of events for this week during a vacation period for students at a location in Hull. The Wednesday activity was listed as “KKK Wednesday” and the calendar was posted on Facebook. It has since been pulled.
Other promotions listed featured more innocent names, like “Funday Monday,” “Colouring Tuesday” and “Face Painting Thursday.”
As the Daily Mirror notes, several Facebook fans quickly pointed out that KKK also stands for the Ku Klux Klan, which of course is a hate group known for its crimes against African-Americans and other races.
A spokesman for the company told the Mirror that the company apologizes “unreservedly for the inappropriate name of a customer promotion at one of our stores,” adding, “All material has been withdrawn and an internal investigation is currently underway.”
