Will Ferrell to star in new comedy from 'Neighbors' writers

Will Ferrell is adding The House to his schedule. The project will be filmed this summer and was written by Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O’Brien, the same team behind Universal’s hit Neighbors.

New Line Cinema scooped up the script after a bidding battle for it broke out among the studios, notes Deadline. The studio is giving the film a budget in the low $40 million range, so expect there to be a big co-star for Ferrell in this.

The House centers on a couple who spend all the money they wanted to set aside for their daughter’s college fund. They decide to open an illegal casino for their neighbors to help raise the money. Ferrell will play the husband, while the wife has not been cast yet.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The House will mark Cohen’s directorial debut. While he’s never directed a feature film before, he has made shorts and Funny Or Die sketches.

Ferrell will co-produce with his Gary Sanchez partner Adam McKay and Good Universe. Executive producers are Chris Henchy and Jessica Elbaum.

Considering the success of Neighbors, it’s not too surprising that Cohen and O’Brien would eventually get to work with Ferrell. The writing duo are also expected to write Neighbors 2 and wrote Fox’s Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates with Neighbors star Zac Efron.

Ferrell’s next movie is Get Hard with Kevin Hart. It opens on March 27.
