Will Smith to star in Paramount’s Boston-set drama 'Bounty'

Will Smith is continuing to take on smaller projects after recent big-budget disappointments. He will star in the Paramount drama Bounty, which is set in Boston.

Paramount bought the spec script by Sascha Penn and it centers on a man wrongly convicted of murder. He manages to escape prison (like The Fugitive), but runs into trouble when the widow of the man he’s accused of murdering puts a $10 million bounty on his head.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported on the project, Smith will produce under his Overbrook Entertainment banner with Madhouse Entertainment’s Adam Kolbrenner.

Following the disappointment of After Earth, Smith seems to be making a point by taking on smaller films. His next movie is Warner Bros.’ Focus, which co-stars Margot Robbie and opens on Feb. 27. He also joined the Ridley Scott-produced Concussion, which opens on Christmas Day.

The biggest project on Smith’s slate is Warner Bros.’ DC Comics movie Suicide Squad, which doesn’t open until August 2016.
