In this day and age of instant news and complete opinion freedom through social media, controversies are as common as day turning into night. One Navy veteran now knows this all too well.
Vannesa Hicks, a Navy veteran and photographer, shot a photo of an infant baby wrapped in the American Flag while being held by her father while wearing his military uniform, according to ABC News.
As a wife of a current active-duty Navy member, she claims her intentions where to honor the flag. She also says her client wanted to do the same (which is why he also chose to wear his uniform).
“This is what he was fighting for, his son wrapped in an American flag,” Hicks elaborated.
However, since the photo has made its way onto the web, Hicks has heard overwhelming backlash.
One example included one unidentified Facebook user calling it “disrespectful, rude, tacky, disgusting, and against the U.S. Flag Code,” via My Fox 8.
In fact she claims she stayed up until 4 am reading comments and feedback about the photo which was posted on her website and other various outlets.
“I know how low I felt during those first few hours,” said Hicks. “[I felt] am I not a good American or veteran or wife. It’s a train-wreck you can’t help but watch.”
Not all the feedback was negative.
As many were jumping all over her use of the flag, others started to take notice and she started to go viral on all social media sites. She has since been contacted by requests for photo shoots and says 15 percent of the money earned from these extra shoots will go to the USO.
